Winter Favorites // 2015

Winter is in full swing here in Chicago.  And let me tell you, I did not enjoy walking around in what felt like -1° the other night.  But today, I’ve rounded up some of my winter favorites.  I’ve continued to layer (obvi), but I’ve also forced myself to take a step out of my comfort zone and *gasp* wear more simple, single-layer outfits under my heavy jackets.

The items in this post are actually almost all in my closet and are the pieces I wear 99% of the time (I do own other clothes though, I swear).

Striped Swing Dress– $39.95

This dress is ridiculously comfortable.  It looks great on its own or layered under a denim vest, but the mock neck collar is trendy and flattering.  Also, it’s made of the kind of fabric that doesn’t stick to your legs and ride up when you’re walking.

Heat Tech Leggings – $79.00

I never realized the powers of fleece-lined and heat tech leggings.  In the Windy City, a 25° day can suddenly turn to a below-0° day with a single gust of wind, so heat tech leggings are a godsend.  These run on the thicker side so can look bulky layered under a pair of jeans, but are actually fairly warm on their own.  These are another option and are essentially long underwear but feel almost weightless under a pair of thicker pants.

Suede Ankle Boots– $89.99

I adore my ankle boots.  The ones I own sold out, but these by Land’s End are similar and not much more expensive.  They look great with everything from jeans to dresses, and the short heel adds just the right amount of height.  While suede is typically a winter material, I have had to learn to be mindful while walking through snow and water in these.

Plaid Babydoll Dress– $59.99

My friend bought me this dress for Christmas after I loved it on her.  It is so comfortable and surprisingly flattering given its loose fit.

Quilted Down Vest– $120 (Select colors $89.99)

Down vests are my go-to when it isn’t quite cold enough for a parka but a warm jacket isn’t going to cut it.  This one really pull an outfit together, especially layered over a bright sweater.

Leopard Faux Fur Coat– $58.40

As I mentioned in this Outfit of the Moment post, haters have called this a pimp jacket but I love it.  Worn with neutral colors, this jacket keeps me warm and feeling a little bit like Cookie from Empire.

Parka – $99.90

I didn’t realize just how serious everybody was when they said I would need a parka when I went to school in Chicago.  Man, was I surprised when my almost-full-length down coat stood no chance against the wind and cold.  The removable fur hood might be my favorite part of this jacket, as it adds a bit of style and protects my ears from the cold.

Red Lipstick – $17

I’ve always loved red lipstick.  It adds such an easy pop of color to everything.  But I’ve found myself reaching for it more and more recently as skies and my clothes tend toward the grayer side.  This shade by MAC is more of a burgundy which adds a great depth to the color without being too dark.

Turtleneck Sweater– $34.99

Mock necks and turtlenecks have been popping up everywhere recently, and when I saw this sweater at H&M I loved it.  My favorite way to wear it is with a long, thin necklace .

Red Sweater – $39.99

This is the brightest piece of clothing I own.  I loved the fit of this sweater and the zipper details at the hem gave it a little something more so I saw no reason not to buy it.  This is the sweater that I’m willing to wear without any other layers because the knit, paired with a pair of plain jeans, speaks for itself.

Stay warm out there!
