Welcome to the second post in my sweat proof series! In the first feature, I talked about the makeup products I love to use to combat sticky summer heat. In today’s post, I’m going to talk a little bit about my favorite sweat proof hair products.
Heat and humidity can wreak havoc on all types of hair, so protecting your mane before it’s too late is really important. Every hair type – even straight, silky hair – can benefit from some targeted products when it comes to hot weather.
Before we dive in, remember that I am not a trained hairstylist. All of my recommendations are based on my personal experience, and there isn’t one product or style that will work for everyone.

Hot, sunny days can suck the moisture right out of your hair (the same way dry winter air can steal your moisture!). To keep your strands hydrated, use a deep conditioner in place of your regular conditioner once or twice a week.
For coarser hair, I love L’Oréal’s Damage-Erasing balm and Kérastase Masque Nutri-Thermique conditioning mask. The L’oreal balm is a heavy conditioner, but not so much so that it makes your hair oily when you’re already sweaty. And Kérastase is pretty much the holy grail of deep conditioners.
If you have finer hair, try Aussie’s 3 minute Miracle Moist conditioner. It’s not as heavy, so won’t weigh down your hair, but will still add moisture and shine to parched locks.
L’Oréal Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm – Ulta, $6.99, Kérastase Masque Nutri-Thermique – Kérastase, $62.50, Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist – Target, $2.69
Now that you’ve moisturized your hair, you still need to protect it from heat damage – especially when it reaches 90°. The best kinds of heat protectants for the summer months are oil-based, since they’ll protect against damage while also moisturizing.
My favorite for SPF protection is Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray with SPF 30. This spray works on both your hair and skin so you can protect your scalp at the same time. It’s perfect for laying out in the sun.
My all-time favorite is Bumble and bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer. This spray protects against both heat tool damage and UV rays. It also makes your hair super silky (unlike some heat protectants, which can leave a sticky residue).
Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – Sephora, $36, Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer – Sephora, $28
If you insist on using heat tools in the summer, your best bet is to use a hair primer along with heat protectant. A primer will keep your hair protected from frizz and sweat, so if you have to blow your hair out for a special occasion, sweat won’t completely ruin it. My favorite is John Frieda’s 3 Day Straight styling spray. It makes your hair silky but not sticky, and really does keep my naturally curly hair from frizzing up if I’ve used any heat tools on it.
Frizz Ease 3 Day Straight Semi-Permanent Styling Spray – Ulta, $9.99
