While it’s already mid-October, fall hasn’t wanted to stick in the Midwest. Just this week, we’ve gone from an overcast 40° to sunny and 70° in a matter of days. That’s Chicago for you.
But since autumnal weather hasn’t quite arrived, I’ve found that layering is the best way to stay warm in the morning and stay cool in the afternoon (especially after walking a half a mile to and from classes every day).
Recently, my style has tended towards muted, earthy colors and fabrics with splashes of pattern thrown in. I’ve especially been loving playing around with different combinations to find items that look put together when all the pieces are worn and, as I peel layers off throughout the day, still look like an outfit.
The items in this post have been in my phone notes for weeks now; they’re all staples of comfortable fall fashion that, for some reason, are not yet in my closet.
Tartan two-piece– $63.55
I’ve been really drawn to two-piece outfits recently. They’re just so easy to throw on, add an accessory to, and go. I especially love the cozy colors in this tartan print and would love to wear it with black tights and heeled black booties (I just found these at our local thrift shop for $20 that are actually for my Halloween costume but that I can’t wait to wear during the day, too).
Patterned Poncho – $29.96
I love this to throw over a fitted sweater and leggings.
Sherpa vest – $48.50
I’ve been wanting this for quite literally a year. My sister bought one on sale at Windsor Store last year but it was the last one and she wouldn’t let me borrow it, so I’ve been on the hunt since.
Faux fur vest – $46
Can you tell I really like vests? This just looks so warm.
Biker jacket – $43.78
While I’m really not as edgy as I’d like to think I am, I love a classic biker jacket. The collar on this one also makes me more comfortable than a bomber-style collar (and is way more flattering with it’s slightly more feminine cut).
Wool blend mini skirt – $22.90
This just screams fall to me, worn with (shocker) black tights and riding boots.
Suede skirt – $39.95
I actually almost owned this a few weeks ago but they didn’t have my size in store. The a-line cut of this skirt is so flattering, and it looks great paired with a fitted sweater or a looser blouse tucked in and draped out.
Riding boots – $59.99
You can’t go wrong with riding boots. I already have a pair of just-over-the-knee black leather boots and a black & brown pair similar to these, but have yet to own a classic brown leather pair.
Blanket scarf – $21.99
I love scarves. Like, I really, really love scarves. At last count, I owned 19. But I still need a blanket scarf! It’s so versatile, even in this plaid print.
