Broke Girl Beauty: Lip Color

As most of you know, I started the Broke Girl Beauty series for a reason. I have luxury taste, but I most definitely do not have a luxury budget. So, I set out to find drugstore products that hold their own against the most expensive brands. Today, I’m focusing on lip color.

I know I’m not alone in obsessing over high-end lip colors; have you seen Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Volupté lipstick? But I, for one, don’t have $40 to throw at Sephora (as much as I wish I did). So I rounded up my favorite drugstore-price lip colors. I think they hold their own against (and are often even better than) their pricier counterparts. Check out my favorites below!

Ask any of my close friends what my favorite beauty brand is there’s a very high chance they’ll say Colourpop. The Los Angeles-based brand is known for their ultra-affordable high-quality lip colors, highlighters and eyeshadows. But my absolute favorite product is their Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick. The formula is creamy but dries to a beautiful matte finish that stays on through the 5+ coffees I drink every day. They also offer a huge range of colors, from the palest pinks to the deepest berries. Colourpop has my go-to chocolate brown lip stick, shade Limbo (pictured), but they have metallic options, too! (My favorite is shade Man Eater, a beautiful rose gold).

I’m typically a matte lipstick kinda girl; like I said, I drink 5+ coffees every day so I have no time to reapply a glossy lipstick. But this demi-matte by Maybelline x Katy Perry is the perfect compromise. The formula doesn’t dry out my lips or flake off like some matte lipsticks can, but still lasts for a solid 3 cups of coffee. (Sidenote: should I use cups of coffee as a wearability ranking now? I’m leaning toward yes.) It’s also super moisturizing for a lip color marketed as matte. My favorite shade is Sphynx (pictured), a dusty pink, but I’ve been dying to try out Perry Panther, the range’s true-black shade.

For those of you who prefer a glossier lip color, check out Nyx Cosmetics’ Soft Matte Lip Cream. This is a cult favorite, both for the range of colors (like shade Moscow, a deep navy blue, pictured) and the formula itself. This lip color applies like a thick, creamy gloss but sets to a soft matte finish that looks like glossy velvet but feels like silk.

This formula by Maybelline has a very similar finish to the Covergirl x Katy Perry line. It’s hydrating, demi-matte and feels amazing. However, the range of shades sets this line apart. The Loaded Bolds line alone has 18 different shades, ranging from midnight blue to greige (my personal favorite, pictured here). If you’re looking for a less dramatic color, I recommend Maybelline’s Color Sensational The Buffs lip color line.

This lipstick holds a special place in my heart. Rimmel’s Lasting Finish by Kate in shade #111 (pictured) was the very first red lipstick I ever owned. Before I tell you about the formula, let me just say that that shade of red has flattered every skin tone I’ve ever tried it on. It’s the everywoman’s Marilyn Monroe red lipstick. But in addition to offering beautifully pigmented colors, the lipstick has a great finish, too. It’s more matte than the other tube lipstick I mentioned, but still has a creamy finish. The formula is also so pigmented that I usually only need one swipe to get full coverage.

Wet n Wild is often the go-to brand for first-time makeup users. The brand’s lipsticks, in particular, are fairly high quality while still going easy on the wallet. My favorite of the offerings is also Wet n Wild’s most classic: MegaLast. This is their basic tube lipstick that leaves a semi-matte, creamy finish that hydrates while packing a pretty powerful punch of color (the shade pictured, Think Pink, is a gorgeous Barbie pink). The line also comes in 26 different shades, which is another way of saying you could buy every single lip color in this range for the price of 1.5 YSL lipsticks. Just saying.

This liquid version of Maybelline’s Color Sensational line is one of my favorites. I actually wrote about it in my Low-End Holy Grail Products post a while back, and for good reason. This formula is similar to the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in application, but dries to a more matte finish that looks so natural (the shade pictured, Nude Thrill, is my MLBB shade).
