Bordeaux is Back

My favorite part of fall is when the leaves change color.  I adore how much brighter it makes the whole world seem, even on an overcast day.  I also admit that I love when my outfits reflect what’s going on in my environment, so when fall comes around, I tend to reach for clothes in shades of brown, gray, chestnut, and orange (and basic black of course; bless my black leggings) and add pops of jewel tones with my accessories.

My best accessory? My lips.

I feel like my title might be a bit misleading–bordeaux has never stopped being trendy.  But shades of oxblood, mulberry, plum, and wine have their biggest moment in the fall.

I own what is an arguably excessive number of bordeaux lipsticks, stains, liners, and glosses (last count: 9 total, with minimal differentiating features).  However.  When you’re like me and start wearing dark lipstick as early as possible, different textures are important when it comes to lip product.  Some are a softer shade; some are matte; some glossy.

I will, however, focus on my current favorite: Sephora Collection Rouge Infusion Lip Stain in Strawberry Tint.  The product itself is a liquid stain that feels like a cross between a liquid lipstick and a gloss in that it is fairly thick upon application.  I have found that this product tends to be drying and slightly patchy on its own (you can see that in the first picture) so I usually wear it over a balm and apply two coats.  I do like that, while the color is intense, if layered over a balm it becomes more of a soft stain than a liquid lipstick.

The liner I pair this with most often (partially because it was the only wine-colored liner I brought with me to school) is Almay’s Stay Smooth Anti-Chap Lipliner in Raisin, a dark burgundy shade, which has since been discontinued but is similar to this.

While this stain can be drying, I do love how buildable it is.  Especially as we transition from late summer to fall (I know it’s mid-October, but it was 65° here today), being able to build this color from a light berry stain to a more intense mulberry is one of the reasons I love it so much.
